ABOUT THIS TRIP
Our Cataract Canyon 5 day rafting trip offers one of the best adventures the Southwest has to offer. With 96 miles to cover, you’ll have plenty of time to explore looming views from the canyon rim, pristine archeological sites, and of course, the world-class whitewater of the Colorado River.
Some of the off-river excursions on this trip include: Fields of petrified wood dating back to the jurassic period, Native American ruins and pictographs, and side canyons that many people never get to explore on shorter trips.
The schedule is more flexible on this trip, where you’ll have more time to enjoy the beaches you’ll be camping on, as well as the rapid section. You can expect at least one night where you’ll camp next to the waves.
The first 50 miles of the trip are flat water, so we motor through this section as we travel deeper into a world of red rock. Shortly after meeting the Green River confluence in the heart of Canyonlands National Park, the whitewater can be heard rumbling downstream.
This rapid section lasts for around 16 miles, and is run both in oar boats and the motor rig. After that, we’ll start motoring after Gypsum Canyon to the North Wash takeout for about 28 miles.
THE WHITEWATER
Between the glossy flat water sections that bookend Cataract Canyon, there are 29 world class rapids in a single 15-mile stretch. Many are Class III and IV, with a few Class V during the high water season in spring.
From May through June, Cataract Canyon boasts the biggest whitewater in the West. This isn’t to say the rapids aren’t as powerful later in the season, they just become much more technical as massive boulders emerge from the bedrock.
Class of rapids:
4-5 High water
3-4 Low water
THE SITES & CAMPING
Depending on the length of your trip, you’ll have opportunities to hike to overlooks, explore ancient ruins and fields of glittering petrified wood, lounge in gorgeous grottos, and rendezvous up side canyons. The longer the trip, the more time you’ll have to explore these hidden treasures.
Each day, camp is made on silky beaches with unbelievable views, both of the canyon and the cosmos. There, you’ll enjoy a comfortable camp set up (kitchen, common area, bathroom, etc.) along with 3-course dinners and filling breakfasts. Lunch each day is usually on the boat or near a site we’ll explore.
The landscape of Cataract Canyon was so inspiring to Mild to Wild’s founders, Alex and Molly Mickel, they married there in 1996! Our Cataract Canyon trips continue on the legacy of Adventure Bound River Expeditions, combined with the legendary customer service and expertise of Mild to Wild Rafting & Jeep tours.
*All Cataract Canyon trips are motored to make the 96-mile journey from the Potash put-in to the North Wash take-out at Lake Powell.

DAY ONE
May 15:
Arrive at the meet time listed in your confirmation email at the Moab Mild to Wild Office (745 Kane Creek Road, Moab, UT 84532). If you’ve already packed all your belongings in dry bags the evening prior, you’ll just hop on our shuttle for a 30-minute drive to the put-in at Potash.
The guides will give an introductory safety orientation and then we will hit the river! The first day on the Colorado River is on calm water, giving you plenty of time to take in the towering canyon walls and stunning desert scenery.
The midmorning float allows for refreshing swims and a short hike if you like! The lunch stop may be in the shade of a cool grotto, on a sandy beach, or right on the boat. Lunch can be mid-afternoon, so be sure to pack your favorite snacks to hold you over until then. Because the water stays flat for the day, you can keep your munchies in a tote for easy access along with other essentials, like sunscreen or extra layers.
In the early evening, you’ll drift into camp for the night. While your guides set up the outdoor living spaces (kitchen, camp chairs, groover (the portable toilet), you can settle in by setting up your tent. Once your home is set for the evening, you’ll have plenty of time to lounge on the beach, explore hikes, get a game going, or anything that means relaxation to you!
Enjoy hors-d’oeuvres while the guides prepare a delicious gourmet dinner followed by dessert. As the sun sinks behind the canyon walls, you’ll have the campfire (as long as park restriction allow) to keep you cozy under the glimmering Milky Way. Drift off whenever you please into one of your best night’s sleep.
DAY TWO ON…
Wake to the smell of fresh coffee and a crackling breakfast. If you’re up and at ‘em, you can catch a breathtaking sunrise painting the canyon in the most vivd hues of the day.
After a hot and filling breakfast, the guides will get the day going by breaking down camp while you pack up your gear and tent. Once the boat is rigged, you’ll get back on the river for a day of big adventures. Depending on the length of your trip, you’ll greet the Green River at an extremely history and scenic confluence as we enter Cataract Canyon.
Here, the current picks up, alluding to the thrilling whitewater and big drops to come. Once you’re about a mile from the largest rapids in Utah, your guides will stop for a thorough safety talk. You’ll launch again and ride through some of the West’s most impressive whitewater, holding on tight as huge waves cover and rock the raft.
After the antics of a lifetime, you’ll settle in a beautiful sandy camp for the night. Like the day before, you’ll assemble your bedroom while the guides make camp and cook up another delicious three-course meal. The following days come with more fun rapids, and opportunities to hike to Ancestral Puebloan ruins.
On the last day of the trip, we will reach Lake Powell where we will take-out at Hite Crossing. We’ll say goodbye to new friends and head back to Moab to conclude your adventure.
Important Note: As the river is different every time it is run, so is each trip! Depending on water flows, the number of participants, and other circumstances Mother Nature imposes, our itineraries are just an estimate!
